| Ports and Terminals |
|
For more than 100 years P&O Nedlloyd and its predecessors have been very active in shipping to and from China. Our head office is in Shanghai and we have branch offices in Qingdao, Nanjing, Ningbo, Xiaman, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Shanghai is an important and strategic port for P&O Nedlloyd. With 11 of our services calling at the Port of Shanghai we expect to handle in this year alone approximately 220,000 TEU, a growth of 30% compared to 2001. Recently P&O Nedlloyd has embarked upon a Terminal Development Strategy. The objective of this strategy is to obtain an interest in terminals in key ports in the world. In return for a certain amount of control over costs, operations and future, P&O Nedlloyd is willing to give these ports its long-term commitment of services and volume. It is the objective of P&O Nedlloyd to run its terminals as multi-user terminals (i.e. not dedicated to P&O Nedlloyd alone). Since the inception of this strategy. P&O Nedlloyd has an interest in operational terminals in New Jersey, USA, and Colombo, Sri Lanka, and is working on terminal projects in Rotterdam, Antwerp, Abidjan and Coega (South Africa). All terminals are, or will be, operated in joint venture and as a multi-user facility. China in general, and Shanghai in particular, are important markets for P&O Nedlloyd. Shanghai perfectly fits our terminal strategy and we are interested currently in the new Deep Water Project developments (Yangshan) in Shanghai.
